AUDITION INFORMATION
The Essence Dance Line combines technical, rhythmic, and dynamic dance to enhance the Clark Atlanta University Mighty Marching Panthers Band. The Dance Line performs with the band at football games, parades, exhibitions, University programs, and other band appearances.

AUDITION ELEMENTS
FUNDAMENTAL ASSESSMENT
You will be evaluated on the fundamental movements of dance and show style band.
Fundamentals include but are not limited to: struts, turns, jumps, leaps, kicks, splits, etc.
CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP I & II
These workshops will teach you performance/show band performance piece(s). Your delivery of choreography will factor 50% of your final evaluation.
INTERVIEW
This interview session will allow us to get to know you better and consider your contributions to the overall vision for the 2018 – 2019 Edition of the Essence Dance Line. Interviews will factor 25% of your final evaluation.
SOLO PERFORMANCE PIECE
MANDATORY FOR ALL AUDITION CANDIDATES FOR THE 2019 – 2020 EDITION OF THE ESSENCE DANCE LINE
Be prepare to showcase an independently created solo performance. This performance should be more than 30 seconds but no longer than 2 minutes. The routine should be a genre of your preference. Your music should be prepared on ANY device that will allow it to be connected to our audio equipment through an auxiliary cord. This solo performance piece will factor 25% of your final evaluation.
New members of the 2019 – 2020 Edition of the Essence Dance Line are determined by a comprehensive final assessment of the aforementioned factors and are evaluated by a combination of marching band staff and artistic professionals. All selections are final. While general feedback may be given, selection choices and scores will not be discussed with any applicants, parents, or previous coaches of the applicants.
IMPORTANT AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
ARRIVAL TIME
You should plan to arrive 15-20 minutes PRIOR TO the call time to allow time for your personal preparation, including changing clothes if needed. Auditions will begin promptly at the specified time.
REGISTRATION ITEMS
$10.00 CASH audition fee. Payable at registration. Proof of your receipt will grant entry to the audition hall.
1 - PRINTED head shot (clear, non-pixelated selfies are acceptable)
1 - PRINTED unofficial transcript or any documentation noting your GPA
ATTIRE
Choreography Workshop Sessions (Friday/Sunday):
* Black leggings (ankle length)
* Black sports bra
* White tshirt (sleeveless)
* Dance and athletic shoes
* Hair should be secured AWAY from your face
* NO make-up; CLEAR gloss ONLY
* NO JEWELRY
Interview Session (Saturday):
* Business Casual attire (more business than casual)
* Complementary hair, jewelry, and make-up
Solo Performance (Saturday) and Final Evaluation (Sunday):
This is a separate change of clothes IN ADDITION TO your choreography learning workshops. There are no specific attire directive for this session. Your attire/make-up selection is at your discretion. The attire/make-up selection should be as “performance ready” as possible. Hair should remain secured AWAY from your face. It all should COMPLEMENT not distract from your performance.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Historically, the band program has not had a scholarship allocation for members of the auxiliary unit. Currently, we are in a position to have funds earmarked for members of the 2019 – 2020 Edition of the Essence Dance Line.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:
* Master Class Session (SATURDAY)
* Minimum 2.7 GPA – Current collegiate students
* Minimum 2.5 GPA – Incoming Freshman
There are a limited amount of spaces available for this master class. You MUST RESERVE a space. To reserve a space, you must request a space VIA EMAIL and THEN receive confirmation directly from Yakema T. Williams, Essence Dance Line Coordinator. Reservation requests will be accepted starting Sunday, April 28, 2019.
Reservations request deadline is Thursday, May 2nd at 9:00 PM.
SPECTATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED INSIDE OF THE AUDITION PROCESS

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS
Video submissions will be accepted for those who ABSOLUTELY can NOT audition in person during the “live” audition dates/times. Acceptable reasons to submit a video audition are typically academic conflicts and/or extreme travel reasons. If you are unable to audition in person, but are not clear if your reason falls within the accepted category, you should notify Yakema T. Williams, Essence Dance Line Coordinator, ASAP, to gain clarity and/or permission to submit a video for consideration. PLEASE NOTE: A video audition IS NOT the ONLY requirement for consideration for the 2019 – 2020 Edition of the Essence Dance Line. After your video has been received and reviewed, THEN will you be invited to campus to audition in person in the near future (date(s) to be determined).

o DANCE performance
* This performance should be longer than 30 seconds but no longer than 2 minutes.
* It should be a genre of your choice. One that showcases your strengths.
* Basic dance attire
* Hair secured away from your face
* No make-up, no jewelry

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO AUDITION
1. If you don't have a YouTube account, create one.
2. Once you have an account, at the top of the page, you should see the search box, followed by an Upload button. Click on upload and you'll be directed to the "upload" page.
3. Click on the large white arrow in the red box in the center of the page (says "Select files to upload" underneath).
4. Choose the file you want to upload. Go to http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55744 for a list of supported YouTube file formats.
5. The next page you land on will say in the upper left corner, "Uploading 1 video." On this page you can do the following:
~ Rename the video (ex: Last Name, First Name – EDL Audition 2019)
~ Add a note or description
~ Set the Privacy to "Unlisted" (We recommend that you choose this option)
6. Soon after you set the video to upload, the video's link address will appear above the "uploading" status bar. Copy this address and email it to Yakema T. William at [email protected]. In the subject line of your email type, "EDL Video Audition 2019 – Last Name, First Name"
